Brockmann Consult GmbH is developing software for environmental data and providing a comprehensive portfolio of services related to environmental data with most of its activities related to Earth Observation.
The company offers specific software solutions and services to access, process, analyse, and disseminate Earth Observation data, thus making them analysis-ready for further exploitation. Flagship developments comprise SNAP, the Sentinel Application Platform for scientific analysis of EO data, the EUMETSAT Ocean Colour Database for managing fiducial reference data for ocean colour satellite validation, Calvalus, a mass-processing platform for EO data based on Hadoop, the CCI Toolbox, or the data cube software xcube. The company’s broad spectrum of services comprise provision of information products, EO-based data services, consultancy for user and mission requirements, instrument design, development of processing algorithms, development of tools to support scientific algorithm development and data analysis, validation of data processing systems, production of higher level information products, product validation and support to scientific analysis of products (e.g. for environmental impact assessment).
Brockmann Consult has 30 employees in Hamburg, Germany which include software architects and engineers and geo-scientists (geographer, physicists, and biologists).
The company has a strong EO scientific background with focus on land and water applications using medium and high resolution, optical & thermal instruments. Its Geoinformation Services Department is providing services for international (Sentinel 2 Global Mosaic / JRC, Copernicus Global Land Service / JRC, Copernicus Climate Change Service / ECMWF), EO4SDG as well as national (BSH, BfG) public customers, and is providing consulting to ESA, DLR as well as science organisations in algorithm development, software processor development and production.
The objective of the Environmental Informatics Department is the development of custom-made software solutions for environmental data. A major part of the activities of Brockmann Consult is system development for Earth Observation data processing systems and data analysis software. Important developments and products are aiming at providing and disseminating Analysis Ready Data. Developments include the Earth System DataCube, which are now continued in the operational Earth System Data Lab Service and complemented by the H2020 R&D project DataCube Service for Copernicus, where the next generation of the application is developed. Recently, Brockmann Consult has been able to advance its data cube services  to operational readiness within the Euro Data Cube activity.
The Hadoop based Calvalus System for massive parallel processing of large EO data sets is successful application used by large customer organisation all over Europe.  SNAP, the Sentinel Application Platform, which is the successor of the very successful BEAM Toolbox for optical EO data, is the first choice for data analysis and processing for a large group of remote sensing experts. Cate, how the CCI Toolbox software has been named, is the desktop and web-based software to access, visualise and analyse all ESA Climate Change Initiative data.
The staff members of the department are internationally recognized experts combining professional software engineering with natural sciences expertise. They consult customers on the design and implementation of their data analysis and processing systems and provide turn-key system solutions.
